Google has recently sent reminder about selling links that pass PageRank, which actually violates its quality guidelines. It has reiterated that guidance periodically to help remind site owners and webmasters of that policy.
In a latest warning, Google Webmaster Central Blog said, ” Selling links (or entire advertorial pages with embedded links) that pass PageRank violates our quality guidelines, and Google does take action on such violations. ” It further adds, ” If you receive a warning for selling links that pass PageRank in Google’s Webmaster Tools, you’ll see a notification message to look for “possibly artificial or unnatural links on your site pointing to other sites that could be intended to manipulate PageRank.”
To address the issue, Google suggests to remove any paid links or advertorial pages, or make sure that any paid hyperlinks have the rel=”nofollow” attribute.
Google also dissuades webmaster to use 301 redirect. Google’s Matt Cutts discusses loss of PageRank from 301 redirects and says “the amount of PageRank that dissipates through a 301 is currently identical to the amount of PageRank that dissipates through a link.

He says,”The amount of PageRank that dissipates through a 301 is currently identical to the amount of PageRank that dissipates through a link. So they are utterly the same in terms of the amount of PageRank that dissipates going through a 301 versus through a link. So that doesn’t mean use a 301. It doesn’t mean use a link. It means use whatever is best for your purposes because you don’t get to hoard or conserve any more PageRank if you use a 301, and likewise it doesn’t hurt you if you use a 301.”
